Sponge gourd or luffa (patola in the Philippines) is a genus of tropical and subtropical vine classified in the cucumber family. It is a good source of calcium, iron, phosphorus and vitamin B. Its juice is used as a natural remedy for jaundice. The juice is obtained by pounding the bitter luffa and squeezing it through a cloth.
